III Reading Classes

Of course, you're not limited to the reading materials you see listed below. The university and public libraries have collections of "graded readers" (多読本) from publishers such as Cambridge, Oxford, and Longman. These often are the best choice. Larger Kinokuniya and Maruzen branches also carry books, magazines, and newspapers in English. English versions of Japanese newspapers are available at many convenient stores and train stations.

If you're looking at Graded Readers, this chart may help you find books at the right level for you. Thank you, Prof. Kitzman!

However, you may find searching for material online more convenient. If so, please explore some of the links below:

eBooks (and magazines, newspapers, etc.) from amazon.com or amazon.co.jp

amazon.com "Look Inside" Feature (amazon.com and amazoncom.co.jp are also good sources for traditional (paper) books, magazines, etc.

Project Gutenberg - a huge collection of online books, especially classics.

Us and Them - my own intercultural communication textbook.

This web page itself has hundreds of articles that you may find interesting. Articles from the Japan Times and the Yomiuri are the easiest; those from foreign newspapers and magazines will be more challenging.

A large collection of eBooks should also be available soon on iTunes. Designed for the iPad, they will also be readable on computers, iPhones, and iPod Touch devices.

eMobo - an iPhone / iPad app for reading and writing "cell phone novels" (携帯小説). More reading available at the TextNovel Web site.

Stories for children.

Japanese stories for children in English.

Essays in English from the Japan Times.(Try to look for essays written by native speakers of English.)

Environmental Issues in English.

Planet PDF - Free books in PDF format.

Get Free Books - another free book site.

Free-ebooks.net - another free book site.

ManyBooks.net - another free book site.

ESLreading.org - A collection of reading and other resources.

East of the Web Short Stories - Extensive collection of short stories. Highly recommended
