Unit Three The Internet
@
Ten years ago, few people had ever heard of the Internet. Today, there are few people who haven't heard of it. Even though many people are talking about and using the Internet, not many people know exactly what it is..
When one hears the word Internet, the World Wide Web and email are what first come to mind. People are also using the Internet to shop, download music, and create their own home pages. Yet, these are fairly recent developments. The Internet began in the late 1960's in the United States. The Defense Department wanted to build a dependable communication system that would continue working even if parts of the network were damaged. This was called ARPANET. Later, universities began using the network, and more major connection points (or nodes) were added, and the Internet was born.
The Internet is best thought of as a worldwide system or network of computers. It's not the wires (or satellites or optical cable) that connect the computers. It's not the large computers that serve the nodes. It's not the computers in our offices and homes. It's all of these things.
If one event can be singled out as the point at which the Internet came to the people, it is the release of the first Internet "browser" in 1993. It was called Mosaic, and it was developed at the University of Illinois. Mosaic later became Netscape Navigator, still one of the most popular browsers used to surf the World Wide Web.
